Residents of a community in Benue State have been forced into a desperate struggle for survival, resorting to drinking contaminated water from stagnant pools as a worsening water crisis continues to expose the failure of basic public infrastructure and governance.

According to reports, the affected community located in Okpokwu Local Government Area—has been battling severe water scarcity for an extended period, leaving residents with no access to clean and safe drinking water. With no functional boreholes or reliable water supply, locals have turned to unsafe water sources, including polluted surface pools, to meet their daily needs.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the situation has reached alarming levels, with families, including children, seen fetching and consuming visibly contaminated water, raising fears of potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. The lack of intervention has further deepened public health concerns in the area.

Community members have expressed frustration and anger over what they describe as prolonged neglect by authorities, calling on Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia to urgently intervene and address the crisis. Residents say repeated appeals for government assistance have yielded little or no response, forcing them into life-threatening conditions.

The crisis has also highlighted broader systemic challenges in rural water infrastructure across Nigeria, where many communities remain without access to clean drinking water despite years of government promises and development plans.

Local leaders and concerned stakeholders have warned that the situation could escalate into a full-blown humanitarian emergency if immediate action is not taken. They are demanding the urgent provision of potable water, rehabilitation of existing facilities, and sustainable solutions to prevent future occurrences.

As pressure mounts on the state government, the plight of the Benue community has become yet another stark reminder of the growing gap between policy promises and the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians, particularly in underserved rural regions.

With lives at risk and health conditions deteriorating, residents say time is running out—and only swift government intervention can prevent further tragedy.
