BENIN CITY, Nigeria — A wave of public anger has erupted across Nigeria as police authorities move to prosecute students of the prestigious Igbinedion Education Centre following a shocking bullying incident that went viral nationwide.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed that all students involved in the assault have been arrested and will be arraigned before a juvenile (family) court in line with laws governing child justice and protection.

The case stems from a disturbing video that circulated widely on social media, showing two students physically attacking a fellow pupil who appeared defenseless on the ground. In the footage, one of the attackers was seen grabbing the victim and stomping on him as he cried out in pain—images that sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice.

Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed that a thorough investigation led to the identification and arrest of all individuals directly connected to the incident. Authorities have since initiated legal proceedings, emphasizing that the suspects will be treated under juvenile justice frameworks rather than conventional criminal courts.

In response to the scandal, the Commissioner of Police has also ordered an усиление of security measures in schools across Edo State. This includes the expansion of the “Operation Safe Schools” initiative aimed at tightening supervision, preventing violence, and addressing behavioral issues among students.

Additionally, police have activated advocacy programs under their Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, targeting students and school administrators with sensitization and reorientation efforts designed to curb bullying and related misconduct.

The school management had earlier taken disciplinary action by expelling the students involved, while the Edo State Government publicly condemned the act and demanded swift prosecution, warning that such behavior would not be tolerated under any circumstance.

The incident has reignited national conversations about bullying, discipline, and accountability within Nigeria’s educational system especially in elite institutions often perceived as insulated from such misconduct. Analysts say the decision to prosecute the students marks a significant shift toward enforcing stricter consequences for school-based violence.

As the case heads to court, many Nigerians are closely watching to see whether justice will be served and whether the outcome will set a new precedent in tackling bullying across the country’s schools.
