Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has appeared before a Federal High Court in Kaduna for his arraignment over serious allegations of money laundering, fraud, and abuse of office, marking a major turning point in Nigeria’s ongoing anti-corruption battle.
The arraignment, led by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), follows weeks of investigation and legal developments surrounding the former governor’s tenure between 2015 and 2023. El-Rufai was brought before the court alongside a co-defendant, identified as Joel Adoga, in a case filed under suit number FHC/KD/73/2026.
According to the ICPC, the charges against El-Rufai include the alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering offences. The anti-graft agency disclosed that the case was formally instituted on March 18, 2026, in line with due legal procedures, and that the former governor had been duly served prior to his court appearance.
In addition to the federal case, authorities revealed that a separate set of charges has also been filed at the Kaduna State High Court. These additional allegations reportedly border on abuse of office, fraud, and attempts to confer undue advantage, further deepening the legal troubles facing the former governor.
El-Rufai’s arraignment comes after his earlier arrest and detention by anti-corruption agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), before he was subsequently taken into custody by the ICPC. The developments followed mounting allegations of financial misconduct linked to his time in office, including claims of large-scale diversion of public funds.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that security operatives maintained a heavy presence around the court premises during the proceedings, reflecting the high-profile nature of the case and the intense public interest it has generated.
