WINNIPEG — A Manitoba jury has found Jamie Felix guilty of five counts of second-degree murder in connection with a deadly mass shooting that took place at a rooming house in Winnipeg in November 2023.
The verdict was delivered in the Court of King’s Bench after jurors deliberated for several hours. Felix had pleaded not guilty to the charges, which stemmed from a shooting inside a multi-unit residence on Langside Street in the West Broadway area of Winnipeg.
The Victims
Five people died as a result of the attack:
- Crystal Beardy, 34
- Stephanie Beardy, 33
- Melelek Lesikel, 29
- Dylan Lavallee, 41
- Shawn Marko, 56
Police responding to the scene early on Nov. 26, 2023, discovered several victims with gunshot wounds. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, while others later died in hospital. Marko succumbed to complications after spending more than a year in hospital following the shooting.
What the Court Heard
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Felix became paranoid after days of drinking and drug use inside the residence, which the Crown described as a drug house. They said he began to believe the people around him were acting suspiciously before opening fire.
Defense lawyers offered an alternative theory, suggesting Felix’s father who was allegedly associated with a gang operating the house may have been responsible and had tried to frame his son.
Chaos After the Verdict
After the verdict was announced, the courtroom briefly descended into chaos when Felix resisted being removed by sheriffs, reportedly shouting and struggling with officers before being subdued and taken away in handcuffs.
Sentence
Second-degree murder in Canada carries an automatic life sentence, though a judge will later determine how long Felix must serve before being eligible for parole.
The case has drawn significant attention in Winnipeg, raising renewed concerns about drug-related violence and safety in vulnerable housing communities in the city.
