Lagos, Nigeria — August 17, 2025
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the recovery of over ₦5 billion and $10 million linked to fraudulent contracts for the turnaround maintenance of Nigeria’s refineries in Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri.
Decades of Corruption Unravelled
The EFCC said the funds were recovered from contractors and officials who inflated contracts or received payments for projects never executed.
“This is only the beginning,” EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede stated. “More recoveries will follow as investigations expand.”
Nigeria’s refineries have been non-functional for decades, forcing the country to rely heavily on fuel imports despite being Africa’s largest crude producer.
Civil society groups praised the EFCC but urged that recovered funds be transparently reinvested into Nigeria’s struggling energy sector.
