Sokoto, Nigeria — August 18, 2025.
A tragic boat accident on the Shagari River in Sokoto State has left at least 10 people confirmed dead and over 40 others still missing after a heavily loaded vessel capsized on its way to the Goronyo food market.
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 17, when the wooden passenger boat, carrying dozens of traders and goods, overturned mid-journey. Witnesses say the boat was overcrowded, and strong river currents worsened the situation.
Emergency Response Underway
Rescue operations began immediately, led by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), local divers, and volunteers from nearby villages. Officials confirmed that only a handful of passengers have been rescued alive so far.
"We are working round the clock with local divers and security agencies to recover victims and rescue survivors," said Idris Muhammad, spokesperson for NEMA’s Sokoto office. "The exact number of passengers is still unclear, but more than 40 remain unaccounted for."
Survivors’ Accounts
A survivor, Musa Ibrahim, recalled the harrowing moments:
"People were shouting and struggling in the water. Some clung to sacks of rice and maize to stay afloat, but many were quickly swept away by the current."
Families have been gathering along the riverbank, anxiously waiting for updates as bodies are pulled from the water.
Recurring Tragedies on Nigerian Waterways
Boat mishaps remain common in Nigeria, especially in northern states where rivers are a key means of transport. Overcrowding, poor safety standards, and lack of life jackets contribute to the high fatality rates.
In June 2023, a similar accident in Kwara State claimed over 100 lives. Maritime authorities have repeatedly called for stricter safety regulations and better enforcement to prevent such tragedies.
Government Reaction
The Sokoto State Government expressed condolences to the victims’ families, promising to strengthen water transport safety.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu said:
"This is a deeply painful tragedy for our people. We will do everything possible to support the families affected and to prevent future occurrences."
Ongoing Search and Rescue
As of Monday morning, divers continued to scour the river while local authorities urged communities to remain calm and cooperate with rescue teams.
NEMA has assured that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
