BAMAKO — The United States Embassy in Mali has issued an urgent security alert to its citizens following reports of explosions and heavy gunfire near key locations, including areas close to Bamako’s international airport.

According to the alert, American nationals in Mali were advised to “shelter in place” and avoid movement as security conditions rapidly deteriorated. The warning came after multiple incidents of gunfire and blasts were reported near the Modibo Keita International Airport and the nearby town of Kati, which hosts a major military base.

The violence forms part of a broader wave of coordinated attacks across Mali, with armed groups targeting several cities, including the capital, Bamako. Residents reported hearing sustained gunfire and explosions, with helicopters seen flying over affected areas as security forces responded to the attacks.

Officials believe the assaults were carried out by militant groups linked to Al-Qaeda, alongside separatist fighters, in what analysts describe as one of the most significant coordinated offensives in recent years. The attacks reportedly targeted strategic sites, including military bases and the airport, intensifying fears about the country’s stability.

The Malian government has since imposed curfews in affected regions while military operations continue to repel the attackers. Authorities stated that the situation is being brought under control, although security concerns remain high.

The United Nations and several international bodies have condemned the attacks, warning that the escalating violence underscores the growing insecurity across the Sahel region. Continued unrest has raised concerns about the ability of Mali’s military-led government to maintain control amid persistent insurgent threats.

The latest advisory highlights the serious risks faced by civilians and foreign nationals in Mali, with embassies urging caution as the situation evolves. Investigations and security operations remain ongoing as authorities work to restore stability.
