At least many residents have been reported killed following a fresh attack by suspected armed Fulani herdsmen on a border christian community in Benue State, Nigeria, in yet another incident highlighting the persistent insecurity in the country’s Middle Belt region.

According to local accounts and officials, the attack occurred late at night in a settlement known as “Channel One,” located in the Ukemberagya/Tswarev council ward of Logo Local Government Area. The assailants, reportedly armed and arriving in large numbers, opened fire on villagers, forcing many to flee into nearby communities for safety.

Local authorities confirmed that seven people lost their lives during the assault, while several others sustained injuries. Some of the injured victims were said to be in critical condition and have been taken to nearby towns, including Anyiin and Ugba, for medical treatment.

Residents described the attack as sudden and coordinated, noting that the gunmen stormed the area under the cover of darkness before retreating shortly after carrying out the killings. Community leaders alleged that the attackers may be operating from nearby deserted settlements believed to serve as hideouts for armed groups.

The chairman of Logo Local Government Area, Clement Kav, confirmed the incident and said security agencies have been informed. He added that authorities are working to assess the situation and prevent further violence.

The latest attack is part of a broader pattern of violence in Benue State, where clashes involving suspected herders and farming communities have continued for years. Analysts attribute the conflict to a combination of factors, including disputes over land and grazing routes, population pressure, and weak security presence in rural areas.

In recent months, multiple communities across Benue have experienced similar assaults, leading to deaths, injuries, and mass displacement of residents. The recurring violence has raised concerns about the effectiveness of existing security measures and the need for coordinated responses at both state and federal levels.

Community leaders have called for urgent intervention, including increased military deployment and cross-border security collaboration between neighboring states such as Taraba and Nasarawa, to curb the movement of armed groups.

As investigations continue, the attack once again underscores the fragile security situation in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where rural populations remain vulnerable to recurring and often deadly raids.
