Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised serious concerns over what he described as the arrest of a respected Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, shortly after the religious leader hosted him in Kaduna State, sparking fresh debate over civil liberties and political tolerance in Nigeria.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi disclosed that he was informed of the cleric’s arrest early in the morning, alleging that security authorities moved against the religious figure following his interaction with him during a visit to Kaduna on Sunday.
Describing the development as alarming, Obi warned that it reflects a growing pattern of suppression and intimidation within the country’s democratic space. He stated that the incident highlights “a deeply troubling state of our nation,” where freedom of speech and movement are increasingly under threat and citizens face harassment based on perceived political affiliations.

However, in a dramatic twist, the cleric at the center of the controversy, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, has publicly denied being arrested. In a video statement released hours after Obi’s claim, Umar clarified that he was only invited for questioning by security operatives and was subsequently released without detention.
“I was not detained… I am free, safe and well,” the cleric said, while appealing to his supporters to remain calm and law-abiding.
