A prominent civil society organisation, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), has strongly criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing the Nigerian government of failing in its primary responsibility to protect lives and property amid rising insecurity across the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the group expressed deep concern over the persistent wave of killings, abductions, and violent attacks recorded in several parts of Nigeria, describing the situation as a “complete breakdown of security architecture” under the current leadership. The organisation warned that the continued deterioration of safety nationwide has left citizens vulnerable and increasingly fearful for their lives.
CDHR specifically pointed to recent incidents of banditry, terrorism, and communal violence, noting that despite repeated assurances from government officials, there has been little or no meaningful improvement in the security situation. The group argued that the frequency and intensity of attacks demonstrate a lack of effective strategy and coordination among security agencies.
According to the organisation, the Tinubu-led government has not shown sufficient political will to tackle the root causes of insecurity, including poor intelligence gathering, weak law enforcement structures, and alleged corruption within the security system. CDHR further stated that the inability to hold perpetrators accountable has emboldened criminal elements across the country.
The group also criticised what it described as the government’s reactive approach to security challenges, rather than proactive measures that could prevent attacks before they occur. It called for urgent reforms, including improved funding, better training of security personnel, and enhanced community-based intelligence systems.
Furthermore, CDHR urged the federal government to prioritise the safety of citizens above all political considerations, warning that continued neglect of security issues could lead to a deeper national crisis. The organisation stressed that Nigerians deserve a government that can guarantee their protection and uphold their fundamental human rights.
As insecurity continues to dominate national discourse, pressure is mounting on the Tinubu administration to deliver concrete results and restore public confidence in the country’s security framework.
The latest criticism adds to growing voices from civil society and political stakeholders who are demanding decisive action to address Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
