Fresh violence has struck Plateau State, Nigeria as armed bandits launched a deadly midnight attack on a local community, killing at least two residents and leaving several others injured in a renewed wave of insecurity across Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
According to reports, the attackers stormed the community under the cover of darkness, opening fire on residents and causing widespread panic as people fled for safety. The late-night assault reportedly caught many residents off guard, leaving victims with little chance to escape.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen moved through parts of the community shooting indiscriminately, resulting in multiple casualties. While two deaths have been confirmed, several others sustained varying degrees of gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
The attack has forced many residents to abandon their homes, seeking refuge in nearby areas amid fears of further violence. Survivors described scenes of chaos, fear, and confusion as the sound of gunfire echoed through the community.
Security agencies were alerted following the incident, but it remains unclear how quickly they responded or whether any suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack.
The latest incident highlights the persistent security challenges facing Plateau State, where communities have continued to experience repeated attacks by armed groups, leading to loss of lives and displacement of residents.
Local leaders and residents are now calling on both state and federal authorities to urgently strengthen security presence in vulnerable communities and take decisive action to prevent further bloodshed.
As tensions remain high, the attack serves as another grim reminder of the ongoing insecurity affecting many parts of Nigeria, with communities increasingly left exposed to violent assaults.
