The United Kingdom and Turkiye have signed a major multi-billion-pound defence agreement aimed at strengthening their military capabilities and reinforcing NATO’s strategic position, marking a significant escalation in global defence cooperation amid rising geopolitical tensions.
According to reports, the deal forms part of an existing £8 billion ($10.7 billion) agreement involving the purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon jets by Turkiye, with the latest phase focusing on advanced training and operational support for Turkish forces.
The newly signed contract includes comprehensive training programs to be conducted in the United Kingdom for Turkish pilots and ground crew, as Turkiye prepares to deploy its first batch of British-built fighter jets.
British defence officials described the agreement as a critical step in enhancing NATO’s combat readiness, particularly along its eastern flank, where tensions have been steadily increasing due to global security challenges.
The deal also involves several major defence companies, including BAE Systems, Leonardo UK, MBDA, Rolls-Royce, and Martin-Baker, all of which will supply key components, training systems, and technical support for the programme.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey and Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler signed the agreement in London, signaling deepening military ties between both countries and a shared commitment to advancing defence capabilities in an increasingly unstable global environment.
