Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly condemned what he described as militant attacks and displacement targeting Christians in Nigeria, urging an immediate end to the violence and persecution affecting Christian communities in the West African nation.
Netanyahu delivered the remarks as part of his Christmas message from Jerusalem, emphasising that the persecution of Christians—or adherents of any faith—“cannot and must not be tolerated” and that the attacks in Nigeria “must end now.” The Israeli leader’s comments highlighted concerns over religious freedom and violence abroad, with Nigeria singled out in his address for what he framed as particularly troubling incidents of militant aggression against Christians. In the same message, he contrasted Israel’s record on religious freedom, asserting that Israel is the only country in the Middle East where Christians can freely practise their faith without fear and celebrate religious traditions openly, while noting declines in Christian populations in other regional contexts.
Netanyahu’s holiday message also included greetings to Christians worldwide, extending Israel’s “Christmas blessings” and reaffirming his country’s support for persecuted Christian communities. His remarks align with similar international calls for an end to violence against religious groups in Nigeria amid ongoing security challenges.
