Stricter US Visa Requirements for Nigerians: Social Media History Now Mandatory

Abuja, Nigeria — August 18, 2025

In a move that has raised concern among Nigerian travelers, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has announced stricter visa application requirements. Effective immediately, all visa applicants are now required to provide a complete record of all social media accounts used over the past five years. Failure to disclose these accounts could result in denial of visa applications.

The new rule is part of the United States’ broader security measures to strengthen background checks and identify potential risks before granting entry into the country. According to embassy officials, applicants must list all usernames, handles, and platforms, even if they are no longer active.

Immigration experts warn that the policy may significantly impact Nigerians applying for study, work, or tourism visas. Incomplete or inaccurate submissions could lead to delays or outright refusal. Some citizens have expressed privacy concerns, questioning the implications for personal data and freedom of expression.

The embassy has stated that the information will be used solely for visa adjudication purposes and will be treated with confidentiality. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review their social media activity and ensure they provide accurate and complete information.

This policy aligns with similar requirements introduced in other countries to enhance border security and monitor online behavior. Experts note that while it may make the visa process more rigorous, compliance will be critical for successful applications.

The U.S. Embassy has urged applicants to prepare early and double-check their social media disclosure to avoid complications.
