TEHRAN/BEIRUT — Israel announced that it has launched a “broad wave” of military strikes on targets inside Iran, marking a major escalation in the ongoing Middle East conflict as Iran continues to widen its retaliatory attacks across the region.
According to reports, explosions were heard in Tehran, while Israeli forces also carried out strikes in Lebanon, targeting positions linked to militant groups aligned with Iran. The Israeli military said the operations were part of its broader campaign against Iran and its regional allies.
Missile and Drone Attacks Spread Across Region
Iran has reportedly launched dozens of ballistic missiles toward Israel, though Israeli defense systems intercepted many of them. Since the beginning of the conflict, at least 11 people have been killed in Israel.
The confrontation has also spilled into Gulf states. Officials said Iranian drone attacks struck the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, causing a small fire but no casualties. Another drone reportedly hit a parking area outside the U.S. consulate in Dubai, again without injuries among staff.
The United Arab Emirates said it intercepted the majority of more than 1,000 Iranian missiles and drones launched toward its territory during the escalation.
U.S. Casualties and Evacuations
The Pentagon confirmed that six American service members have been killed in the conflict, including four U.S. Army Reserve soldiers who died in a drone strike on a command center in Kuwait.
In response to the rapidly worsening situation, the U.S. State Department has begun preparing evacuation flights for American citizens wishing to leave the Middle East. Several embassies in the region have been temporarily closed to the public, and non-essential personnel have been ordered to depart from several countries.
Maritime Security Threats
The conflict has also reached international shipping routes. A vessel in the Gulf of Oman near the UAE coast was struck by a projectile, damaging the ship but causing no injuries.
The incident raised concerns about the security of oil tankers moving through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping lanes. U.S. officials indicated that American naval forces may escort tankers to ensure safe passage if the threat escalates.
Uncertain End to the War
With strikes continuing across multiple countries and military casualties mounting, analysts say the conflict is rapidly expanding beyond a bilateral confrontation, drawing in regional actors and international powers.
Officials in Washington have outlined several objectives, including weakening Iran’s missile capability, limiting its naval power, and preventing it from acquiring nuclear weapons, though it remains unclear how long the conflict may continue.
