DUBAI — The World Health Organization (WHO) has suspended operations at its global emergency logistics hub in Dubai due to growing security concerns linked to the ongoing U.S.–Iran–Israel conflict that has destabilized parts of the Middle East.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed that activities at the facility have been temporarily halted, explaining that “operations at WHO’s logistics hub for global health emergencies in Dubai are currently on hold due to insecurity.”

Strategic Role of the Dubai Hub

The Dubai facility serves as one of the WHO’s most important global logistics centers, responsible for storing and distributing emergency medical supplies to countries experiencing crises such as disease outbreaks, conflicts and natural disasters. The suspension therefore raises concerns about potential disruptions to global humanitarian response efforts.

War Spreads Across the Region

The decision comes as the conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States continues to expand beyond the immediate battlefield. Iranian missile and drone attacks have targeted several Gulf states, including the United Arab Emirates, with air defenses intercepting many of the projectiles though some damage has occurred in cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

These attacks have forced temporary airspace closures, flight cancellations and heightened security alerts across the Gulf region, affecting major transport and logistics hubs that support international humanitarian operations.

Health Infrastructure Under Threat

The World Health Organization has also raised alarm about the impact of the conflict on healthcare systems in the region. The agency reported multiple attacks on health facilities in Iran, including hospitals and ambulances, resulting in casualties among healthcare workers and further straining emergency services.

Global Concerns

Health experts warn that the temporary closure of such a major logistics hub could delay the delivery of critical medical supplies to vulnerable populations around the world if the conflict continues.

For now, WHO officials say they are closely monitoring the security situation and will resume operations once conditions allow safe functioning of the facility.
