Lebanon has taken a dramatic and unprecedented diplomatic step by expelling Iran’s ambassador, escalating tensions with Tehran and signaling a major shift in its stance amid the intensifying conflict involving Hezbollah and ongoing Israeli airstrikes.
The Lebanese government officially declared Iran’s ambassador, Mohammad Reza Sheibani, persona non grata, ordering him to leave the country within days, in what authorities described as a response to violations of diplomatic norms and growing interference in Lebanon’s internal affairs.
The move comes at a critical moment as Lebanon grapples with escalating violence triggered by Hezbollah’s involvement in the wider Iran-Israel conflict. The Iran-backed group has been actively engaged in cross-border attacks against Israel, drawing heavy retaliation that has devastated parts of Lebanon and displaced large numbers of civilians.
Lebanese officials have increasingly distanced themselves from Hezbollah’s military actions, insisting that decisions related to war and national security must remain solely under state authority.
