At least three people have been confirmed dead while several others have been displaced following a violent clash between Hausa and Fulani residents in Kebbi State, deepening concerns over rising communal tensions in Nigeria’s northwest.
The deadly incident occurred in Alwasa community, located in Argungu Local Government Area, where what initially began as a minor disagreement quickly escalated into a full-blown conflict.
According to eyewitness accounts, the crisis reportedly started after a dispute involving youths over reckless motorcycle riding. The situation took a tragic turn when a Fulani youth allegedly stabbed a Hausa resident, triggering outrage and sparking retaliatory attacks.
Local authorities confirmed that the violence intensified after the suspect fled the scene, leading to reprisal attacks by angry youths. The escalation resulted in multiple deaths, including individuals who were reportedly not directly involved in the initial dispute.
The Chairman of Argungu Local Government Area, Sani Gulma, disclosed that the reprisals targeted Fulani settlements, causing widespread displacement as residents fled their homes to escape the violence.
Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, who visited the affected community, strongly condemned the killings and warned against further retaliatory attacks. He assured residents that security agencies have been directed to apprehend those responsible and restore peace to the area.
The governor also emphasized the long-standing peaceful coexistence between Hausa and Fulani communities in the area, noting that the recent violence threatens to destroy decades of unity if not urgently addressed.
Security forces have since been deployed to the community to prevent further escalation, while efforts are ongoing to stabilize the situation and support displaced residents.
The incident highlights the fragile nature of communal relations in parts of northern Nigeria, where minor disputes can quickly spiral into deadly confrontations, often fueled by underlying ethnic and social tensions.
As residents remain on edge, authorities are urging calm while investigations continue, warning that any further violence could worsen the already volatile security situation in the region.
