Nigeria Government Demands Death Sentence for Nnamdi Kanu After Terrorism Conviction

Abuja — The Federal Government has asked the Federal High Court to impose the death penalty on IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, following his conviction on seven counts of terrorism, according to Channels Television.

Lead counsel for the prosecution, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, told the court that several of the charges — specifically Counts 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 — carry a mandatory death sentence under Section 12H of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013. He argued that the court has no discretion in the matter, insisting that the law “empowers you to do so … the only sentence … is death.

Despite the prosecution’s request, Justice James Omotosho later sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment for several counts, choosing not to impose the death penalty.

Awomolo also called on the court to restrict Kanu’s access to digital devices going forward, and urged that he be held in a “safest custodial centre” to prevent any security risk.
