Large Explosion Rocks Kyiv as Russia Launches Major Air Assault Across Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine — A large pillar of smoke rose over Ukraine’s capital early Tuesday after air raid alerts were activated across Kyiv and residents were urged to seek shelter, as Russia launched one of its most extensive aerial assaults in recent weeks.

The attack formed part of a wider overnight barrage targeting multiple Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv and Dnipro, amid warnings from Ukrainian authorities that Russia was preparing a renewed large-scale strike campaign. Witnesses reported explosions across the capital as emergency alerts sounded and residents moved into underground shelters and metro stations for protection.

Ukrainian officials said the strikes killed at least 23 people nationwide and injured more than 130 others. Kyiv suffered some of the heaviest impacts, with damage reported to residential buildings, civilian infrastructure, and public facilities. Authorities said at least nine high-rise structures, a kindergarten, offices, and administrative facilities were affected.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia launched more than 70 missiles and over 650 drones during the assault. Ukrainian air defence systems reportedly intercepted hundreds of incoming aerial targets, though a number still reached urban areas. Ukrainian officials said no interceptions were reported for the hypersonic missile component of the attack.

In Kyiv, fires broke out in several districts after missile impacts and falling debris. Officials reported vehicle fires, damage to apartment blocks, and disruptions to electricity supply affecting approximately 140,000 residents. Thousands of civilians spent hours inside the city’s subway system while emergency crews responded across affected neighbourhoods.

Ukrainian authorities described the assault as one of the most intense attacks on the capital in recent months. President Zelenskyy renewed calls for additional international military assistance, particularly expanded air defence capabilities, arguing that sustained protection remains essential as missile and drone attacks continue.

Russia’s defence ministry stated that its strikes targeted facilities linked to Ukraine’s defence industry and military infrastructure. Moscow has previously warned of what it described as “systematic strikes” against strategic targets in Kyiv, while Ukraine continues to deny accusations of intentionally targeting civilians.

The latest escalation comes as diplomatic efforts to reduce hostilities remain stalled and the war enters its fifth year. International organisations have continued to call for restraint and renewed efforts to prevent further civilian suffering amid the ongoing conflict.

As rescue operations continue and damage assessments unfold, Ukrainian authorities remain on heightened alert over warnings that additional large-scale attacks could still occur in the coming days.
