Emergency crews in Toronto launched a major water rescue operation on Wednesday afternoon after a small inflatable boat capsized near Cherry Beach, leaving one person rescued and another still missing.
According to authorities, the incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. in the waters off the popular waterfront area. The Toronto Police Marine Unit, along with other emergency responders, quickly arrived at the scene after reports that the boat had overturned in Lake Ontario.
Police confirmed that one man, believed to be in his 40s, was pulled from the water alive and transported to hospital with serious injuries. Officials later stated that his condition was not considered life-threatening. Search efforts continued throughout the afternoon for another individual who remained unaccounted for.
Witnesses in the area reported seeing multiple emergency boats and rescue personnel combing the waters near Cherry Beach as helicopters and marine crews searched for signs of the missing person. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved.
The cause of the capsizing remains under investigation, and police have not confirmed whether weather conditions, mechanical failure, or safety equipment issues may have contributed to the incident.
Cherry Beach is a well-known recreational waterfront destination located along Toronto’s eastern harbourfront and attracts boaters, swimmers, and visitors throughout the warmer months.
Toronto police said updates would be provided as the search operation continues.
