Paul Costelloe, the celebrated Irish fashion designer best known for his long-standing role as personal designer to Princess Diana, has died at the age of 80 after a short illness, his fashion house announced.
Born in Dublin in 1945, Costelloe trained in Paris and worked in Milan and New York before launching his own label, Paul Costelloe Collections, in 1979. Over the years, his designs spanned womenswear, menswear, accessories, and homeware.
In 1983, Costelloe was appointed as Princess Diana’s personal designer — a collaboration that continued until her death in 1997. His elegant tailoring and use of luxurious fabrics made him a fixture at London Fashion Week for more than 40 years.
Costelloe passed away in London, surrounded by his wife Anne and their seven children. Tributes have poured in from across the fashion world and public life, with many praising him as a “remarkable Irish success story.
He leaves behind a legacy of timeless design and a fashion house that remains influential on both sides of the Irish Sea.
