Brazil’s ex-President Jair Bolsonaro was taken into custody by federal police on November 22, 2025, ending months of house arrest, according to court and law enforcement sources.
The arrest was ordered by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who cited concerns over the tampering of Bolsonaro’s electronic ankle monitor and the risk that supporters gathering for a planned vigil could help him evade justice.
Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to 27 years and three months in prison for his role in a coup attempt after losing the 2022 election, though he continued to appeal the verdict.
According to his legal team, the detention occurred early in the morning and was carried out respectfully, without handcuffs, in line with the court’s instructions.
