Residents Block Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos Over Demolition Speculation

Residents of the Oworonshoki area in Lagos State have taken to the Third Mainland Bridge in a dramatic protest against ongoing demolition activities in their community. The demonstration, which began early Monday morning, has caused major traffic disruptions across one of Nigeria’s busiest transport arteries.

Eyewitnesses reported that hundreds of residents gathered on the bridge, waving banners and chanting slogans demanding that the government halt the demolition of homes and local structures. Many expressed fears of forced displacement, claiming that authorities provided little notice or adequate compensation for affected families.

The Lagos State government confirmed awareness of the protest and said officials are engaging with community leaders to address residents’ concerns. In a brief statement, a spokesperson emphasized the importance of ensuring public safety and minimizing traffic chaos while seeking a peaceful resolution.

Traffic across the Third Mainland Bridge has slowed to a crawl, with commuters facing long delays during the morning rush hour. Public transport operators warned of cascading effects on other parts of Lagos, urging residents to seek alternative routes.

The protest highlights growing tension between Lagos State authorities and communities facing demolition or redevelopment projects. Advocacy groups have called for increased transparency and community consultation to prevent conflicts and ensure that residents’ rights are respected.

Authorities are expected to meet with Oworonshoki community representatives later today to negotiate a way forward. Meanwhile, residents continue to occupy the bridge, underscoring the depth of local frustration and the urgency for immediate dialogue.
