LAREDO, Texas — One person has been confirmed dead after a business jet carrying six people crashed onto a major highway in Laredo, Texas, triggering a dramatic emergency response and rescue effort involving first responders and nearby motorists.
The crash occurred late Tuesday night on Loop 20 near Laredo International Airport after the aircraft reportedly experienced mechanical difficulties while approaching the city. Authorities said airport personnel lost communication with the aircraft shortly before reports emerged that it had gone down on the roadway.
Officials later identified the aircraft as a NetJets-operated Cessna Citation Latitude business jet. Flight tracking data indicated the plane had departed from San José del Cabo, Mexico, and was originally headed to Austin before diverting toward Laredo.
According to police, six people were on board at the time of the crash. One person died while five survivors were transported to hospital for treatment. Authorities had not immediately released the identity of the victim pending notification of family members.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as flames engulfed sections of the aircraft after impact. Video and photographs from the scene showed bystanders stopping their vehicles and attempting to assist before emergency crews arrived. Several civilians worked alongside responders to help occupants exit the damaged aircraft.
Investigators also confirmed that debris from the aircraft struck at least one vehicle travelling on the highway. The occupants of that vehicle survived and were taken to hospital in stable condition. During rescue operations, several police officers were treated for smoke inhalation after entering the crash area.
Local authorities closed portions of Loop 20 as emergency crews secured the site and began recovery operations. Federal investigators, including aviation authorities, are expected to examine flight data, aircraft condition, communications records and other evidence to determine the cause of the crash.
The incident adds to a series of recent aviation accidents across the United States and renews attention on emergency response procedures when aircraft incidents occur near populated roadways. Investigators have urged the public not to speculate while the official review remains underway.
