RIYADH — Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense announced Sunday that it intercepted three drones after they entered the Kingdom’s airspace from Iraq, underscoring continued security tensions across the Gulf despite a fragile regional ceasefire.

Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Turki Al-Maliki said Saudi forces successfully intercepted the unmanned aerial vehicles before they could threaten populated areas or critical infrastructure. He stressed that the Kingdom would take all necessary operational measures to defend its sovereignty and ensure the safety of citizens and residents.

The ministry did not immediately identify who launched the drones or specify their intended targets. However, officials confirmed that the aircraft crossed into Saudi territory through Iraqi airspace amid ongoing instability linked to the wider regional conflict involving Iran, Gulf states, Israel, and the United States.

Although hostilities in the region have significantly decreased since a ceasefire agreement took effect in April, Gulf countries continue to report intermittent drone and missile incidents. Saudi Arabia and neighboring states have remained on heightened alert following months of attacks on military sites, oil facilities, airports, and civilian infrastructure.

The latest interception came only hours after Saudi Arabia strongly condemned a separate drone attack near the UAE’s Barakah nuclear power facility in Abu Dhabi. Gulf governments have increasingly warned that repeated attacks on strategic infrastructure could threaten regional stability and global energy security.

Security analysts say Iraq has increasingly become a launch corridor for drone operations by armed groups aligned with Iran and other regional militias. Saudi officials have repeatedly accused such groups of destabilizing the region through cross-border attacks targeting Gulf nations.

Despite the continued security threats, Saudi Arabia has maintained diplomatic engagement aimed at preventing a broader regional war. The Kingdom has simultaneously strengthened air defense coordination with Gulf allies while supporting international efforts to stabilize the Middle East after months of escalating conflict.
