A 38-year-old man in Hamilton, Ontario, has been arrested and charged after allegedly shooting himself during an attempted home invasion, according to police.

Authorities said officers were called to a residence near Steven Street at around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered the man suffering from serious gunshot injuries and he was transported to hospital for treatment.

Investigators reported finding a trail of blood that led them to a discarded firearm, which they believe was used in the incident. Further examination of the evidence led police to conclude that the injured individual had shot himself during the attempted break-in.

The suspect, identified as Eric Haines, has since been charged with multiple offences, including break and enter, criminal harassment, discharging a firearm with intent, and breaching a probation order. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.

Police have not released details about the intended target of the home invasion or whether any other individuals were involved. However, officials emphasized that the case highlights the risks and legal consequences associated with violent criminal activity.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns around home invasions and firearm-related offences in parts of Ontario, as law enforcement agencies continue efforts to address public safety and prevent similar occurrences.
