United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on all parties to fully respect a newly announced ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, describing the temporary truce as a critical opportunity to de-escalate tensions in the region.

The UN chief welcomed the 10-day ceasefire agreement, which was facilitated with the involvement of the United States, expressing hope that the pause in hostilities could serve as a foundation for broader negotiations aimed at achieving lasting peace.

In a statement delivered by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres emphasized the need for all actors involved in the conflict—including state and non-state groups—to comply fully with international law, particularly international humanitarian law, throughout the duration of the ceasefire.

The call for restraint comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah, with the ceasefire representing a rare pause in hostilities following days of intensified conflict along the border.

Officials say the truce is part of wider diplomatic efforts to stabilize the Middle East, where ongoing conflicts—including the broader regional crisis involving Iran—have significantly increased the risk of escalation. Analysts warn that any violation of the ceasefire could quickly reignite violence and undermine fragile diplomatic progress.

The United Nations reiterated its position that sustained dialogue remains the only viable path toward long-term stability, urging all sides to use the ceasefire period to engage constructively and prevent further loss of life.
