A senior figure in Nigeria’s Labour Party has called for the immediate removal of the newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun State, alleging that the appointment violates legal and constitutional provisions.

The Labour Party Vice Chairman raised concerns over the legitimacy of the appointment, insisting that the process did not follow due procedure and could undermine electoral integrity in the state. The party official described the situation as “illegal,” warning that it poses a threat to democratic processes ahead of future elections.

According to the party, the appointment raises serious questions about transparency and adherence to established guidelines governing electoral appointments in Nigeria. The Vice Chairman argued that allowing the REC to remain in office under such circumstances could erode public trust in the electoral system.

The development comes amid ongoing political tensions in Osun State, where disputes over governance and legality of public appointments have continued to dominate political discourse. Observers note that controversies surrounding institutional appointments have often triggered broader debates about rule of law and political interference.

The Labour Party has called on relevant authorities, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to urgently review the appointment and take corrective action if necessary. The party emphasized the need to uphold democratic principles and ensure that all electoral processes remain credible and lawful.

As of the time of reporting, there has been no official response from INEC or federal authorities regarding the allegations. However, the call for the REC’s removal is expected to further intensify political debate in the state, particularly as stakeholders continue to scrutinize electoral processes and governance structures.
