The federal government is preparing to deliver a one-time grocery rebate top-up to millions of Canadians by June 2026, as part of broader efforts to ease rising food and living costs across the country.
The payment, tied to the transition from the GST/HST credit to the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, will provide immediate financial relief to low- and modest-income households. Officials say the one-time top-up will be issued as early as spring and no later than June 2026.
According to federal details, the top-up will be equivalent to 50 per cent of a recipient’s annual GST credit, delivered as a lump-sum payment. This means eligible Canadians could receive hundreds of dollars in additional support depending on their income and family size.
Illustrative figures released by the government show that a single individual could receive about $267 as a one-time payment, while a family of four could receive up to $533 in immediate relief. These payments are part of a larger package expected to benefit more than 12 million Canadians.
Eligibility for the rebate is based on qualification for the GST credit, meaning recipients do not need to apply separately. Payments will be automatically issued by the Canada Revenue Agency using information from tax filings.
Following the one-time payment, the government will roll out a permanent increase of 25 per cent to the benefit starting in July 2026, providing ongoing quarterly support to help households manage everyday expenses.
Officials say the combined measures are designed to address affordability challenges driven by inflation, particularly in food prices, while maintaining longer-term financial support for vulnerable populations.
As Canadians continue to face economic pressure, the upcoming grocery rebate top-up is expected to offer short-term relief, with additional benefits scheduled to continue through the new program in the months ahead.
