Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for direct peace negotiations with Lebanon following a massive Israeli bombardment that killed more than 300 people, in one of the deadliest escalations in the ongoing regional conflict.

The call for dialogue comes just a day after intense Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon, an offensive that has drawn international concern and placed a fragile ceasefire involving the United States and Iran under serious threat.

According to reports, Netanyahu has instructed his cabinet to begin direct negotiations with Beirut “as soon as possible,” signaling a potential diplomatic shift after weeks of military escalation.

The proposed talks are expected to focus on key security concerns, including the disarmament of the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah and the establishment of long-term peaceful relations between Israel and Lebanon.

The United States is expected to play a central role in the diplomatic effort, with the State Department preparing to host discussions between the two countries in Washington in the coming week.

The push for negotiations is unfolding against the backdrop of a broader regional crisis. A ceasefire between the United States and Iran—announced by Donald Trump remains fragile, with ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon cited as a major obstacle to its full implementation.

At the same time, Iran has not lifted its near-total blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route responsible for transporting a significant share of the world’s oil and gas. The disruption has already caused severe impacts on global energy supply, with maritime traffic through the strait dropping sharply from normal levels.

Lebanese officials have also expressed interest in diplomatic engagement. President Joseph Aoun reportedly indicated that efforts toward negotiations are gaining international support, while emphasizing the need for a ceasefire to create conditions for meaningful dialogue.

Despite the diplomatic signals, violence has continued on the ground. Israeli airstrikes reportedly persisted in parts of Beirut and other areas, while tensions remain high across the region with multiple fronts of conflict still active.

The latest developments underscore the delicate balance between military escalation and diplomatic resolution in the Middle East. While the call for talks offers a potential path toward de-escalation, the ongoing violence and competing interests among regional and global powers continue to pose significant challenges to achieving lasting peace.
