Edmonton police have charged a 21-year-old man in connection with a series of phone scams reported across the city over the past month.
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says the investigation began in late March after officers identified a pattern of suspects posing as bank representatives and contacting residents by phone.
In the reported incidents, callers told victims their bank cards had been compromised and instructed them to place the cards in an envelope for pickup. A driver would then attend the victim’s home to collect the package. Police say the cards were later used for unauthorized purchases or cash withdrawals.
On April 2, officers arrested Cheng-Tso (Josh) Huang, 21, of Toronto, who has been charged with fraud. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on April 7 in Edmonton.
Investigators say efforts are ongoing to identify additional suspects connected to the scam.
Police are advising the public to be cautious when discussing banking information over the phone and to verify unexpected calls directly with their financial institution. They also recommend never sharing personal identification numbers and regularly monitoring financial statements for unauthorized transactions.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or has information about the incidents is asked to contact police at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
