Mass Killings Renew Criticism of Nigerian Government’s Security Response as Focus on Separatist Groups Questioned

Renewed attacks by armed extremist groups in Nigeria, reportedly leaving over 100 people dead in recent incidents, have intensified criticism of the federal government’s ability to protect its citizens, with many questioning national security priorities.

The killings, linked to insurgent factions such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, occurred in vulnerable communities where residents say they have repeatedly warned authorities about looming threats without receiving adequate protection. Survivors and local leaders described the attacks as devastating, with entire communities displaced and homes destroyed.

In the aftermath, critics argue that the Nigerian government has not done enough to prevent recurring violence, particularly in the northern regions where insurgent activity has persisted for more than a decade. They point to what they describe as slow response times, inadequate military presence, and a lack of sustained security infrastructure in high-risk areas.

At the same time, the government’s continued focus on separatist movements such as Indigenous People of Biafra has drawn scrutiny. Some analysts and civil society groups argue that disproportionate attention on political dissent in the southeast may be diverting resources and strategic focus away from combating terrorism in the north.

Supporters of the government, however, maintain that security operations are being conducted across multiple regions simultaneously. Officials have repeatedly stated that Nigeria faces complex and evolving threats, requiring a broad national security approach that addresses insurgency, banditry, and separatist tensions at the same time.

The administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also emphasized ongoing military operations and reforms aimed at strengthening intelligence gathering and improving coordination among security agencies. Authorities insist that efforts are being intensified to dismantle terrorist networks and restore stability.

Despite these assurances, public frustration continues to grow. Community leaders, advocacy groups, and political observers have called for a reassessment of security priorities, urging the government to place greater emphasis on protecting vulnerable populations and preventing mass-casualty attacks.

As Nigeria confronts one of its most enduring security challenges, the latest wave of violence has reignited a national debate over accountability, strategy, and the urgent need to ensure the safety of citizens across all regions.
