Renowned Nigerian human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has issued a strong warning to U.S. President Donald Trump, cautioning against any military action on Cuba while declaring recent American sanctions on the Caribbean nation as unlawful under international law.
Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), criticized the U.S. administration’s latest policies targeting Cuba, particularly an executive order reportedly signed in January 2026, which imposed stricter economic restrictions on the country. He argued that such unilateral sanctions violate established principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.
In a sharply worded statement, Falana warned that any attempt by the United States to escalate tensions into military confrontation would constitute a grave breach of global legal norms and could destabilize the already fragile geopolitical balance in the Americas.
The legal expert maintained that no sovereign nation has the right to impose coercive economic measures or military force on another country without international authorization. He emphasized that such actions undermine global order and set dangerous precedents for international relations.
Falana’s comments come amid growing tensions between Washington and Havana, following renewed sanctions and mounting pressure from the Trump administration. Analysts say the measures have further strained Cuba’s already struggling economy, raising concerns about humanitarian impacts and regional stability.
He further urged U.S. institutions, including Congress and the judiciary, to act as checks on executive power, stressing that international law must not be disregarded in pursuit of political or strategic interests.
This is not the first time Falana has publicly condemned U.S. foreign policy under Trump’s leadership. In recent months, he has consistently accused the administration of engaging in what he describes as unlawful military interventions and economic coercion against sovereign states.
Global observers warn that any escalation involving Cuba could have far-reaching consequences, potentially igniting wider tensions across Latin America and beyond. Diplomatic experts are calling for restraint and renewed dialogue to prevent the situation from spiraling into open conflict.
As pressure mounts, Falana’s intervention adds to a growing chorus of voices urging adherence to international law and warning against actions that could trigger another major geopolitical crisis.
