A deadly ambush by suspected bandits in Nigeria’s Taraba State has left at least three police officers and a local vigilante leader dead, in yet another grim reminder of the worsening insecurity across the country.

The attack occurred in Tordamisa community, located in Donga Local Government Area, where armed assailants reportedly launched a violent assault on both residents and responding security personnel. According to police authorities, the officers were mobilized following a distress call reporting an ongoing attack in the area.

However, upon arrival, the security team was met with heavy gunfire from the attackers, triggering a fierce exchange. Despite efforts to repel the assailants, three officers — identified as Corporal Raphael Danjuma, Constable Ebenezer Daniel, and Police Constable Samuel Bawa — were fatally shot in the line of duty.

Police sources revealed that one of the officers was initially declared missing during the chaos, but his body was later recovered in a nearby bush after a search operation.

The violence also claimed the life of a 60-year-old vigilante leader, identified as the chairman of the local security group in the community. His body was found after the attack, underscoring the risks faced by local defenders working alongside formal security forces.

Authorities described the slain officers and vigilante member as heroes who paid the ultimate price while protecting their community. The Taraba State Police Command has since intensified security operations in the region, vowing to track down those responsible for the нападение.

The latest killings add to a growing list of violent attacks across Nigeria’s rural regions, where banditry, terrorism, and communal violence continue to overwhelm local security structures. Analysts warn that without urgent and coordinated action, such incidents could further erode public confidence in the country’s ability to protect lives and property.

As grieving families mourn their loved ones, residents in Taraba and beyond are once again left asking a troubling question: how long will these deadly attacks continue unchecked?
