The Nigerian Army has confirmed that Boko Haram terrorists launched coordinated assaults on several strategic military locations in the North-East, marking a worrying escalation in the long-running insurgency that has plagued the region for more than a decade.

According to military sources, the attacks targeted key operational positions of Nigerian troops in Borno State, a region widely regarded as the epicenter of the country’s counter-terrorism operations against Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The Nigerian military acknowledged that the insurgents carried out sustained assaults on strategic bases, but insisted that troops mounted strong resistance and successfully repelled several of the attacks after intense firefights. Officials said air and ground forces were deployed to counter the militants and prevent them from overrunning the positions.

Security analysts say the latest attacks demonstrate a renewed level of coordination among jihadist groups operating in the Lake Chad region, where Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters have increasingly targeted military installations in recent weeks.

Reports indicate that some of the assaults were aimed at capturing military weapons, vehicles, and ammunition, a tactic frequently used by insurgent groups to replenish their arsenal after losing equipment in earlier battles.

The attacks are part of a broader surge in violence across Nigeria’s northeast, where militants have intensified operations against both civilian communities and security forces. Recent incidents have seen multiple military bases attacked and soldiers killed during coordinated raids, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.

Boko Haram, a jihadist militant group founded in northeastern Nigeria, has waged an insurgency since 2009, seeking to establish an extremist state and oppose Western-style governance and education. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions across Nigeria and neighboring countries in the Lake Chad Basin.

In response to the latest attacks, military authorities said they have reinforced troop deployments and intensified surveillance operations across affected areas to prevent further incursions by insurgents.

Security experts warn that despite years of military campaigns, Boko Haram and its affiliated factions remain capable of launching high-impact attacks on military facilities, particularly in remote areas where government presence is limited.

The renewed attacks have once again raised concerns about the resilience of insurgent groups in Nigeria’s northeast, as well as the ongoing challenge facing the Nigerian government in bringing lasting stability to the region.
