ABUJA, Nigeria — In a significant move to confront Nigeria’s worsening insecurity crisis, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has secured a fresh military partnership with France following a high-level phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron.

The development signals a major diplomatic and strategic breakthrough, as Nigeria intensifies efforts to strengthen its security forces amid persistent terrorist attacks, banditry, and insurgency across several regions.

Speaking during a meeting with state governors in Lagos, Tinubu revealed that France has agreed to support Nigeria with critical military equipment and operational training. The agreement, according to the President, followed a “lengthy discussion” with Macron focused on enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism.

Tinubu emphasized that his administration is prepared to leverage international goodwill and existing credit facilities to secure the much-needed assets required to tackle insecurity head-on. He noted that France is among several global partners Nigeria is engaging as part of a broader security reinforcement strategy.

“The next phase of our struggle is the challenge of insecurity,” Tinubu said, stressing that defeating terrorism and criminal violence remains central to his government’s agenda.

The announcement comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with multiple security threats, including Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, armed banditry in the North-West, and widespread kidnapping across the country. Recent deadly attacks, including coordinated bombings in Borno State, have further heightened urgency for advanced military support.

Beyond France, Tinubu disclosed that his administration is actively reaching out to other nations to build a coalition of support, particularly in acquiring advanced technology and intelligence capabilities needed for modern warfare.

Analysts say the collaboration with France could mark a turning point in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity, especially if it leads to rapid deployment of modern equipment and improved training for security personnel. However, they caution that long-term success will depend on effective coordination, accountability, and sustained political will.

The agreement also reflects Nigeria’s growing reliance on international partnerships to address internal security challenges an approach that underscores both the scale of the crisis and the urgency for decisive intervention.

As Nigerians await the delivery and deployment of the promised military assets, expectations remain high that the partnership will translate into tangible improvements on the ground, restoring safety and stability in some of the country’s most troubled regions.
