Nine villagers abducted by armed terrorist in Kwara State, Nigeria, are reportedly still being held captive months after their families and community members paid more than ₦40 million in ransom to secure their freedom.

The victims were kidnapped during a violent attack on a community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State in late 2025. Armed men reportedly stormed the village, firing gunshots and abducting several residents before escaping into nearby forests.

Following the abduction, families of the victims and community members reportedly raised over ₦40 million demanded by the kidnappers in an effort to secure the safe release of the captives. However, despite the ransom payment, the victims have not yet been freed, leaving their relatives in distress and uncertainty over their fate.

Residents of the affected community said the prolonged captivity has deepened fear across the area, with many villagers worried about further attacks by armed groups operating in nearby forests. Families of the kidnapped individuals have continued to appeal to authorities and security agencies to intervene and ensure the victims’ safe return.

Local sources expressed frustration over the growing trend in which kidnappers collect ransom payments but still refuse to release their victims. Community leaders say the situation reflects the worsening security crisis affecting many rural parts of Nigeria.

Kidnapping for ransom has become increasingly common across several regions of the country, with criminal gangs targeting communities, highways, and farms. Security experts warn that the continued payment of ransom, although often the only option for desperate families, may encourage further attacks by armed groups.

Residents are now calling on the Nigerian government and security agencies to intensify operations in the region and dismantle criminal networks responsible for the kidnappings.

The fate of the nine villagers remains uncertain as families continue to wait anxiously for news of their release.
