KANO, Nigeria — Nigeria’s political landscape is heating up ahead of the 2027 general elections as key opposition figures converged in Kano for a strategic meeting that is already fueling intense speculation about a potential mega alliance.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson met with ex-Kano governor and political heavyweight Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso during a high-profile visit over the weekend.

The gathering, held at Kwankwaso’s residence, was officially described as a Sallah courtesy visit. However, political observers say the presence of multiple opposition power brokers in one place signals early coalition-building moves aimed at challenging the ruling party in 2027.

Photos and messages shared after the meeting showed a relaxed atmosphere, with Kwankwaso welcoming his guests and extending festive wishes. Yet behind the celebrations, analysts believe serious political conversations may have taken place regarding the future of Nigeria’s opposition movement.

Speaking during the visit, Obi downplayed any political motives, insisting the trip was primarily to celebrate the Sallah festival and pay respects. Nevertheless, his remarks about rebuilding Kano’s economy and restoring its industrial strength have been interpreted by some as early campaign messaging.

The meeting comes at a critical time when opposition figures are increasingly exploring alliances to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle. Nigeria’s 2027 general elections are expected to be fiercely contested, with coalition politics likely to play a decisive role.

Kwankwaso, a major political force in northern Nigeria and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, is widely seen as a key figure in any potential opposition alliance. His influence in Kano a strategic voting bloc makes him a central player in discussions around coalition-building.

Observers say a possible alignment between Obi’s strong support base in the South and Kwankwaso’s northern influence could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political dynamics. However, no formal agreement has been announced, and all parties involved have remained cautious in their public statements.

Despite attempts to downplay the political significance of the meeting, the optics alone have sparked nationwide debate, with many Nigerians closely watching for signs of a united opposition front.

As the countdown to 2027 gradually begins, one thing is clear: the battle for Nigeria’s presidency may already be taking shape — and the alliances formed now could determine the country’s political future.
