SAN JOSÉ — Costa Rica’s president-elect Laura Fernández Delgado has received formal congratulations from both the United States and the European Union after winning the Central American nation’s 2026 general election, officials in Washington and Brussels announced Monday. Her victory marks a significant political shift in Costa Rica and positions her to assume office on May 8, 2026 amidst regional and domestic expectations for policy continuity and reform.

Fernández, a 39-year-old political scientist and close ally of outgoing President Rodrigo Chaves Robles, secured the presidency with approximately 48.3 % of the vote, surpassing the required threshold to win outright in the first round of voting on February 1 without the need for a runoff. Her nearest rival, Álvaro Ramos of the National Liberation Party (PLN), received about 33 %.

The United States, through Secretary of State Marco Rubio, issued a statement affirming Washington’s “warm congratulations” to Fernández on her clear electoral victory and expressing eagerness to continue cooperation with Costa Rica on shared priorities including **security, anti-narcotics efforts, immigration, and economic partnerships.”

Similarly, the European Union joined the chorus of global congratulations, highlighting the peaceful and democratic nature of Costa Rica’s election process and reaffirming its commitment to working with the incoming administration on issues ranging from sustainable development to trade and climate action.

Fernández, representing the Sovereign People’s Party (PPSO), campaigned on a platform that seeks to continue many of Chaves’ policy priorities, particularly in addressing issues such as rising crime and strengthening public security — themes driven by Costa Rica’s recent surge in violent crime rates. Analysts see her election as part of a broader rightward trend in Latin American politics amid voter concerns about security, governance, and public trust in traditional parties.

Her victory also saw gains for the PPSO in the Legislative Assembly, which secured a working majority of approximately 31 of the 57 seats, giving Fernández considerable influence in Congress as she prepares to take office.

In her victory speech, Fernández thanked voters and called for unity and dialogue across political lines, promising leadership that respects democratic norms and works toward national development and security. Observers note that her administration will be watched closely both domestically and internationally as it transitions from campaign rhetoric to governing responsibilities.
