LAGOS — At least three persons were injured on Monday morning when an overspeeding Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tanker truck collided with a private vehicle while navigating a bridge in Lagos State, emergency responders and eyewitnesses told Dalena Reporters. The crash, which occurred on the Iyana-Oworo bridge along a major Lagos traffic corridor, forced commuters and residents to assist the injured before authorities arrived on the scene.
According to eyewitness accounts, the CNG truck was travelling at high speed when it rammed into a smaller car that had been attempting to cross the bridge. The impact of the collision sent the private vehicle into the roadside embankment and injured its driver, while two pedestrians who were near the bridge’s pedestrian walkway at the time — were also struck and hurt by flying debris.
First responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and officers from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were among the first to arrive, tending to the injured and redirecting traffic to prevent further collisions. All three victims were transported to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and treatment; their conditions were described by responders as stable but requiring observation.
Photos and video circulating on social media in the aftermath of the crash showed extensive damage to the private vehicle, which sustained a smashed front end and crushed bumper. The CNG truck whose driver exited the cab and cooperated with authorities appeared to have significant front-end damage but did not catch fire.
Officials from FRSC confirmed to Dalena Reporters that initial findings suggest overspeeding and loss of vehicle control as contributing factors, though a full investigation will be conducted to determine whether mechanical failure, driver fatigue, or other variables played a role. “Preliminary observations indicate that speed was a significant factor, but we will gather CCTV footage and statements to clarify the full sequence of events,” an FRSC spokesman said.
Traffic on the Iyana-Oworo corridor one of Lagos’s busiest junctions linking several commercial areas — was significantly disrupted for several hours as emergency crews worked to clear debris and restore safe movement. Commuters expressed frustration over the delays but praised authorities for their quick response and efforts to assist the injured.
The incident has renewed calls from road safety advocates for stricter enforcement of speed regulations, particularly for heavy commercial vehicles such as CNG tankers, which pose heightened risk in high-density urban environments. Statistics from road safety agencies show that collisions involving heavy trucks remain a leading cause of traffic-related injuries in Nigeria’s largest city. (saharareporters.com)
The driver of the CNG truck was taken into custody by police for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities said formal charges could follow if evidence confirms reckless driving or traffic violations under Nigerian road safety laws.
