MAIDUGURI — In a significant security development in northeastern Nigeria, the Borno State Police Command has uncovered a substantial cache of ammunition in the state capital as part of intensified efforts to clamp down on criminal and insurgent activities. Operatives acting on credible intelligence recovered 912 rounds of B32 API-type (7.62×51 mm) ammunition hidden in the Kumshe Jamba Mari area of Maiduguri on January 4, 2026, the police confirmed.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, the discovery came after community members provided actionable information that prompted a targeted search by officers under the leadership of the Divisional Police Officer of Lamisula Division. Upon locating the concealed stockpile, the area was professionally cordoned off and the ammunition was safely retrieved with support from a police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, ensuring public safety during the operation.
The recovered munitions have since been secured by the command as investigations continue to trace both the source of the ammunition and the intended recipients or users, officials said. No suspects have been publicly named in connection with the find, but authorities emphasised that the recovery underscores the impact of intelligence-led policing in disrupting potential threats ahead of more serious incidents.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, commended community members for their cooperation and urged residents to sustain their vigilance by reporting suspicious activities, noting that such partnerships between law enforcement and the public are crucial to enhancing regional security.
This seizure adds to ongoing security successes in the region. In related operations in Maiduguri, troops under Operation HADIN KAI also previously uncovered a separate stash of high-calibre 12.7 mm ammunition warheads and live rounds concealed in a drainage channel a find that military and police authorities linked to efforts to deny criminal elements freedom of action.
Security analysts say these recoveries reflect a broader pattern of efforts by Nigerian security forces to pre-empt the proliferation of weapons and ammunition that could fuel insurgent violence, banditry and terrorism in Borno State and the wider northeastern region, but also underscore ongoing challenges in securing vast rural and urban areas threatened by criminal networks.
