A tragic house fire in Brazeau County has left a baby dead and a toddler missing, as emergency crews continue search efforts following the devastating blaze that occurred southwest of Edmonton.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), officers were called to the rural property near the community of Breton around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday after reports of a house fire. Upon arrival, authorities discovered that a woman and two children had managed to escape the burning home, but two other children an infant and a toddler were still trapped inside.
Firefighters battled the blaze, but police indicated that rescue efforts for the children inside the home were not possible due to the intensity of the fire. After the flames were extinguished, responders conducted an initial search of the property and located the body of the infant inside the residence.
As of the latest update, emergency crews remain at the scene, continuing efforts to locate the missing toddler who is still unaccounted for.
Authorities confirmed that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. However, early indications suggest there is no evidence pointing to suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the devastating impact of residential fires and the challenges faced by emergency responders in rural areas. Breton, a small community located roughly 100 kilometres southwest of Edmonton, remains at the centre of ongoing search and investigative operations.
