The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that former Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is now officially eligible to represent the Super Eagles at senior international level after receiving clearance to switch his football nationality from England to Nigeria under FIFA regulations

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Okonkwo 24,  previously represented England at several youth levels but had not been capped at senior level, leaving the door open for a change of allegiance. After fulfilling the necessary criteria and securing approval from FIFA, he is now free to be selected for Nigeria’s national team in upcoming competitive fixtures.

The clearance represents a significant boost to the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping options, adding depth to a department already featuring established names such as Stanley Nwabali, Francis Uzoho, Maduka Okoye and Amas Obasogie. Nigerian football officials have welcomed Okonkwo’s decision, with NFF communications staff describing his eligibility as a positive addition to the squad’s long-term plans.

Okonkwo, who developed through Arsenal’s academy and has carved out a strong club career — most recently as goalkeeper for Wrexham in the English Championship — brings experience from structured European football environments and is regarded as a potential competitive option for Nigeria in future Africa Cup of Nations qualifying ties and other major continental competitions.

While he was not available for Nigeria’s current campaigns this season, Okonkwo’s switch ensures he will be eligible for selection in the Super Eagles’ forthcoming fixtures, including qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations

His clearance underscores Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to attract talented players of Nigerian descent and reinforce the national team in key positions ahead of future continental and global competitions.
