A woman has died after being struck by a Surrey Police Service vehicle early on Christmas Day in Surrey, British Columbia, the province’s police oversight agency has confirmed in a statement, prompting an independent investigation. According to the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia, the collision occurred at about 6:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Thursday when officers were leaving a gas station near the intersection of 108 Avenue and 132 Street, close to Whalley Athletic Park, and were involved in a traffic incident with a pedestrian.

Paramedics responded and transported the woman to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but she subsequently died, the IIO said, noting that the victim has not been publicly identified as the investigation continues.

The Surrey Police Service has indicated it will provide no further details while the IIO conducts its review, a standard practice in cases where police involvement results in death or serious harm.

The IIO’s mandate is to determine whether any police action was necessary, reasonable, and proportionate under the circumstances, and it has urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
