U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States carried out “numerous deadly strikes” against Islamic State (ISIS) militants in northwest Nigeria, stating that the military action targeted groups he said have been “viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians” in the region. In a post on his social media platform, Trump described the strikes as executed under his direct command and said the Department of War performed “perfect strikes,” adding that the U.S. will continue action if the violence against Christians persists.

Trump framed the military operation as a strong response to what he called escalating religious violence, warning that more actions would follow should extremist groups continue to target civilians. He declared that “under my leadership, our country will not allow radical Islamic terrorism to prosper” and extended a provocative Christmas greeting “to all, including the dead terrorists.”

The strikes, reportedly coordinated with Nigerian authorities, mark a significant escalation of U.S. involvement in the conflict in Nigeria, where armed groups including ISIS affiliates have carried out attacks on both Christian and Muslim communities amid longstanding insecurity and insurgency. The U.S. military’s Africa Command confirmed the operation took place but provided limited details on specific targets or casualties.

Trump’s announcement follows weeks of heightened rhetoric from his administration, including threats of intervention and visa restrictions on Nigerians allegedly involved in violence against religious groups. While supporters see the strikes as a decisive stand against terrorism and protection for persecuted Christians, critics argue the situation in Nigeria is complex and shaped by broader security, regional, and socio-political dynamics.
