Since assuming leadership in 2022, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Africa’s youngest head of state at 37, has initiated a series of ambitious reforms and development projects aimed at revitalizing Burkina Faso's economy, infrastructure, and national identity.
Economic Reforms and Industrialization
Under Traoré's administration, Burkina Faso's GDP has grown from approximately $18.8 billion to $22.1 billion. This economic growth is attributed to strategic reforms, including the nationalization of two gold mines and the inauguration of a national gold refinery capable of processing 150 tonnes annually. These moves aim to retain more value from the country's mineral wealth within its borders.
In agriculture, the government has distributed over 400 tractors, 239 tillers, and 710 motor pumps to boost production. Consequently, tomato production increased from 315,000 metric tonnes in 2022 to 360,000 metric tonnes in 2024, while millet and rice production also saw significant rises.
Infrastructure Development
Traoré's leadership has prioritized infrastructure development. The Ouagadougou-Donsin Airport project, expected to open in 2025, aims to replace the aging Thomas Sankara International Airport, enhancing the country's connectivity.
Additionally, the government is constructing new roads and upgrading existing ones to improve transportation and stimulate economic activities across the country.
Cultural and Social Initiatives
Emphasizing national identity, Traoré's administration has replaced colonial-era legal attire with traditional Burkinabé clothing in courts. Furthermore, a mausoleum honoring former President Thomas Sankara is under construction, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Francis Kéré. The memorial aims to celebrate Sankara's legacy and inspire unity among citizens.
Security Enhancements
To address security challenges, Traoré has expanded the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) by nearly 100,000 members. This initiative seeks to bolster local defense capabilities against insurgent threats.
