The Thai military announced early Monday that it conducted airstrikes against Cambodian positions along the long-contested border after a fresh outbreak of violence that left at least one Thai soldier dead and several others wounded.
Thailand said the strikes were triggered by alleged Cambodian military movements including the repositioning of heavy weapons and combat units near the frontier which, according to Thai authorities, violated the recently brokered ceasefire.
Cambodia’s defence ministry, however, denied initiating any assault. It described Thailand’s air raids as unprovoked aggression, asserting that Cambodian forces had not returned fire.
The renewed fighting has already had a serious humanitarian toll: reports indicate that at least four Cambodian civilians were killed and several more wounded, while hundreds of thousands of residents on both sides of the border are being evacuated amid fears of further escalation.
The border, historically fraught and largely undemarcated has seen repeated flare-ups, but today’s developments mark the most serious breach since the ceasefire signed just months ago.
Regional and international observers have warned that without urgent diplomatic intervention, the conflict risks further spiralling, threatening stability across Southeast Asia.
