Nigerian singer Kcee has broken his silence on the longstanding dispute with fellow highlife star Flavour, revealing that he once turned down an opportunity to sign him, not out of animosity, but because at that time he genuinely believed Flavour lacked the potential to succeed.
According to Kcee, the incident dates back many years when talent manager Soso Soberekon brought Flavour to him, seeking a record deal. With Kcee already established in the industry boasting success and material comfort the then-Rising artist did not meet the mark. Kcee says:
“I told Soso I can’t sign Flavour because I didn’t see potentials in him at that time.”
He insists the decision was not personal and maintains he does not hold a grudge. Instead, he now believes the misunderstanding has grown out of differing perceptions and a broader debate over who represents Igbo cultural and highlife music.
The disagreement reignited publicly in 2024 after Flavour criticized what he described as copying of his style — a comment many interpreted as directed at Kcee, who by then had ventured into Afropop-fusion and Igbo-inspired music. Kcee responded fiercely on social media, rejecting claims that he was imitating Flavour. On X he declared: “We are not on the same level. Stop trying to gatekeep Igbo culture. You’re not a custodian.
Kcee said his humility has sometimes been misinterpreted as insecurity or inferiority, but his track record from early hits to sustained relevance speaks for itself. He added that while some doubters once dismissed him, time and outcomes have forced them to reassess their judgments. The musician says he remains dedicated to celebrating his heritage and won’t apologize for doing so on his own terms.
