Residents of Offa in Kwara State were thrown into panic late Thursday night after a series of loud explosions rocked parts of the town, damaging houses and shops and leaving locals fearful and confused. The blasts came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had carried out airstrikes targeting Islamic State (ISIS) militants in northwest Nigeria on Christmas Day, although authorities have not yet confirmed whether the Offa explosions were linked to that military action.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing powerful explosions around midnight and described debris raining down from the sky, with some claiming to have seen fragments believed to be from a drone-delivered device. Video footage obtained by Dalena Reporters showed damaged residential buildings and shops scattered across the affected areas as distressed residents called on the Kwara State Government to intervene.
A member of a local vigilante group confirmed that several structures, including homes and storey buildings near a prayer ground and other locations, sustained damage. Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries have been reported so far, though the cause and origin of the explosions remain officially unconfirmed.
Some residents expressed bewilderment that Offa — typically a peaceful town — would be hit by such an incident, while authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the events or clarify whether the explosions were related to the U.S. airstrikes announced by Trump. Investigations are ongoing as security agencies work to determine the source of the blasts and ensure public safety.
